Indoor climbing, up close.

Tying in, belaying, and the walls it all happens on — a closer look at what an indoor certification course involves.

  • A climbing instructor and a climber standing at the foot of an indoor wall, working together on the rope at the climber’s harness.
  • A close view of resin climbing holds bolted to a plywood wall, chalk residue visible on the grips.
  • A climber threading the rope through the tie-in points of a sit harness and dressing a figure-eight knot.
  • A pair of chalk-covered hands resting on a wooden bench beside an open chalk bag.
  • A belayer at an indoor wall with the rope running through a belay device clipped to the harness, one hand on the rope above the device and the braking hand below it.
  • Looking up a tall indoor climbing wall built from large angular plywood volumes, with holds scattered across them.
  • A climber part-way up an indoor top-rope wall marked with route grades, watched from the ground by an instructor holding a clipboard.
  • Chalk dust hanging in a shaft of daylight inside a climbing gym, with a wall of holds blurred behind it.
  • A wide view of an indoor climbing wall with two people watching from the ground as a climber works up a graded route.
